Jean Got a Job, Sort Of?
Great news on the job front. Jean just found out that she got a long term sub position at East Vincent Elementary. Yahoo!
She’s taking over for a teacher (Candice) who’s going to be on maternity leave from the beginning of March through the end of the school year. Her due date is March 10th, so we’re not exactly sure when Jean will begin. Hopefully Candice’s doctor recommends she stops working a few weeks before that date.
From what Jean’s gathered from talking to advisers and other teachers, the best way to find a full time teaching position is by grabbing a long term substitute’s job and impressing with your performance. Landing a long term position was Jean’s #1 goal coming into the New Year.
Everything just happened to fall in place on this one. Jean had worked all last spring at East Vincent Elementary, where Rosemont buddy Lisa teaches third grade. She taught a variety of classes there and a lot of the teachers were familiar with her and requesting her to substitute their classes when they knew they would be out.
In December, Jean found out that Candice was interested in having her takeover her students in learning support when she went out on maternity leave. At the same time, Jean was wrapping up her special ed student teaching at Owen J. Roberts Middle School and caught the interest of one of the assistant principals there, Dr. Bell, who offered to give Jean a mock interview over the holidays to help Jean prepare for her impending job hunt.
Jean was really excited that Dr. Bell would take time from her Christmas break to meet, and they got together on December 30th. Jean was allotting about an hour of time for it, but they spent over two hours together. Jean came out of it very upbeat and excited because Dr. Bell gave her a couple of suggestions for how to handle upcoming interviews.
As fate would have it, East Vincent Elementary switched principals over the Christmas break, and none other than Dr. Bell was appointed principal. How’s that for a stroke of good fortune?
