Jean Got a Job, Sort Of?

Great news on the job front. Jean just found out that she got a long term sub position at East Vincent Elementary. Yahoo!

She’s taking over for a teacher (Candice) who’s going to be on maternity leave from the beginning of March through the end of the school year. Her due date is March 10th, so we’re not exactly sure when Jean will begin. Hopefully Candice’s doctor recommends she stops working a few weeks before that date. ;)

From what Jean’s gathered from talking to advisers and other teachers, the best way to find a full time teaching position is by grabbing a long term substitute’s job and impressing with your performance. Landing a long term position was Jean’s #1 goal coming into the New Year.

Everything just happened to fall in place on this one. Jean had worked all last spring at East Vincent Elementary, where Rosemont buddy Lisa teaches third grade. She taught a variety of classes there and a lot of the teachers were familiar with her and requesting her to substitute their classes when they knew they would be out.

In December, Jean found out that Candice was interested in having her takeover her students in learning support when she went out on maternity leave. At the same time, Jean was wrapping up her special ed student teaching at Owen J. Roberts Middle School and caught the interest of one of the assistant principals there, Dr. Bell, who offered to give Jean a mock interview over the holidays to help Jean prepare for her impending job hunt.

Jean was really excited that Dr. Bell would take time from her Christmas break to meet, and they got together on December 30th. Jean was allotting about an hour of time for it, but they spent over two hours together. Jean came out of it very upbeat and excited because Dr. Bell gave her a couple of suggestions for how to handle upcoming interviews.

As fate would have it, East Vincent Elementary switched principals over the Christmas break, and none other than Dr. Bell was appointed principal. How’s that for a stroke of good fortune?

Wynne Christmas Party

Story best viewed at The Mac Shack.

Sunday started off somewhat lazily, with everyone lounging around in bed still trying to recover from a couple of late nights and over eating.  Jake had to serve at 11:15, so there was no rush to get everyone out of bed.  The only bummer was that Brett was up and at them by 7:15 in the morning.  I bit the bullet and got up with him while Jean grabbed an extra couple of hours of sleep. We had a party to go to that afternoon, so Jean spent the morning cooking some chicken wings, which smelled incredible.

After mass it was off to the Wynne holiday party at Billy Wynne’s house over in Harleysville. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten together with that side of the family. I’m thinking it’s been at least three years?

It was all of Pop’s siblings, along with their children and grandchildren. I have no idea how many people were there, but it was easily over 60. Heck, Pop’s family alone comes in at 23 with kids and grandkids, so it could have been more people. Nothing like getting a bunch of Irish Catholics together.

Jean, Abby, and Brett went right after church, while Jake and I met up with them about 2 hours into the party. Jake had a CYO game, which they won, and then we zoomed right over.

Dinner at Bucca Di Beppo

Saturday night we went to Bucca Di Beppo for an early birthday dinner. Italian food is easily my favorite, and I love the way that Bucca serves everything family style. Veal Parmigiana was the number one item on my hit list, and Jake and I polished off a “Buca Sized” serving (serves 4-5) on our own.

We had a nice sized crowd of 16, with the Kansas crew still in town. It was the five of us, my mom, Jean’s parents, my sister Kate, the Kansas crew (Becky, Ashley, Terry, and Cindy) and my two younger cousins, Alex and Adrianna.

It was great seeing Adrianna at the dinner. She was a total surprise; I don’t think I’ve seen her in at least two years. The last time I bumped into her was at a CYO event following one of Jake’s games. It was great for my kids to see her because it’s been ages since they’ve seen her. It’s hard to believe that she’s almost 16. Good God, time flies by.

We ordered enough food to feed an army, especially if you get a peek at the amount of left overs sitting in my fridge. Once we finished dinner, I was toasted by my sister in Africa, sort of. She had written a toast for me, emailed it over to my mom, who in turn read it right off of her iPhone at the dinner table. Isn’t it neat how small technology has made the world?

On the ride home, I was telling Jean how nice the toast was, at which point Abby piped up by saying, “Jeez Dad, you looked like you were almost ready to cry.” I’m just glad I was able to pull off the “almost ready to cry look” as I was struggling to fight back the tears while my mom was reading.     :)

New Year’s Day 2010

Story best viewed on The Mac Shack

After getting in a little before 3, it’s easy to understand that our morning took a little time to get going.  Jean and I ended up going to 11:15 mass, where we met Jean’s parents and picked up Brett.

When we got home around 12:30, Abby was just starting to get moving and Jake was still dead asleep in bed.  We got him up and moving and Jean went about getting the house ready for our dinner guests.

Right at 3, our visitors arrived.  It was my Mom, my sister Kate, and my relatives from Kansas (Terry and her daughter Ashley, and Cindy and her daughter Becky) who came back east for the Christmas Break.  We had a real nice dinner of pork loin, which Jean prepared both with sauerkraut and without.  I wasn’t the best of hosts early in the evening, because we had scheduled dinner at the same time Penn State was playing LSU in the Capitol One Bowl Game, which ended up going right down to the wire before the Nits pulled it out.  Poor planning on my part.

After dinner, Jake was picked up by his buddy Tim for a sleepover, which left me and Brett as the only men in the house.  New Year’s Day ended up being ladies day here at the McMenamin house.

Following dinner, we sat down in front of the roaring fire and played a couple of games.  First we played Left, Center, Right, which was won yet again by Abby.  It’s a fun little game that requires very little talent, but we always end up playing it for money.  Each player puts up $3 per round, and the winner ends up taking the entire pot.  I don’t recall the last time we played that Abby didn’t win.  I don’t know what she does with the dice, but she’s doing something right.

After that, we finished the evening off playing Trivial Pursuit, which was won by my team (Terry, Ashley, Becky, and myself).  Abby had a party at Allison Mauger’s house, which Jean had volunteered to help chaperone.  When Jean went running out for the night, the gathering broke up and everyone headed home for the night.

New Year’s Eve 2009

Story best viewed on The Mac Shack

As always, we managed to over commit ourselves on New Year’s Eve.

I ended up having to work, and the ride into work was a bit crappy.  We got about 2-3 inches of snow early in the morning, which was just enough to make my commute miserable.  I was in the office until we closed down at three, and I can’t recall a day that was much slower.  The highlight of the work day was writing my year end review blog post.

Jean had breakfast for a few of the Sacred Heart mom’s early in the morning, so as I was leaving for work Jean was just starting to get slightly neurotic trying to whip the house together and get her food prepared to go into the oven.  When all was said and done, she said it ended up being a nice relaxing event.

We started our evening off with our camping buddies.  We all met at Tom and Terry Nykanen’s house for cocktails before we headed over to Vikoo for dinner.  The normal camping crew was there; Tom & Terry Nuke, Vaughn & Maria Landes, Brian Schmidt,  and Lauran and Mike Maloney.  In addition, we were glad to have Maureen & Dave Hellberg, as well as the Landes neighbors (whose name escapes me?).  We left the kids at the Nukes house and had a fantastic meal over at Vikoo.  The only negative was waiting almost 50 minutes to get seated, which is a bummer when you already have an invitation.  It reminds of the Seinfeld episode, it’s easy to take the reservation, but you also need to HOLD the reservation…

After dinner, we were a little crazy running around.  We dropped Brett off at Jean’s parents for the rest of the night around 11:30 before heading over to a Sacred Heart party at Lori & Rich Howarth’s.  We ended up getting there around 11:40, so at least we weren’t in the car when the ball dropped.

Once the ball dropped, it was into the kitchen for our reoccurring game of Kadoo, with the girls taking on the guys.  The table was packed, with couples including Rich & Lori Howarth, Marybeth & Bob Kuklentz, Nancy & Tom Hewitt, Bridget & Mike McGuigan, Kelly & Don Feliz, Charlotte & Paul Colletta, Shelia & Bob Mauger, Chris & Tom Tivanen, Pat & Ben Guarino, and of course the ring leaders, Jen & Juan Portela.

Before we knew it, it was 2:30 in the morning and the girls had managed to beat us 2 games to 0.  I’m thinking they probably cheated, but then again, I’m a terrible loser.  We’ll just have to up our game to take them down the next time we get together.

2009-The Year in Review

Now that 2009 is behind us, I thought I would take a few moments to review the year that just passed.

The year started with us off in Africa visiting Erin and her family in Tunisia. The trip began with us flying out of Philly early in the evening on Christmas Day and touching down in Tunis mid day on the 26th. We ended up staying with the Wisotzki’s through the New Year before heading home on January 5th.

How do I remember that day, you ask? It happened to be my 39th birthday, and a day the five of us will never forget. For those that don’t know the full story, click here. As cool as Paris is known to be, there isn’t much that’s cool about sleeping on the floor of Charles de Gaulle airport. 46+ hour trips home aren’t too much fun either.

February brought us a trip to Clearwater and a weekend in the Florida sun. Highlights included hanging on the Gulf, lounging by the pool, the Clearwater for Youth banquet, as well as a great father son outing at the Phillies game for Jake and I.

The summer memories were once again dominated by spending the summer down at the beach with Grandmom Phil. This year’s house was one to remember, with the house sitting on the second floor right on the beach. The view from the dining area of that beach house can’t be beat.

We were lucky to have Erin, Lucas, Noori, and Isa in the States for an extended stay. They made it for the last few weeks of the beach stay and then were able to get to spend some time in Limerick/Linfield. It was great to see them, although it was a bit of a bummer that Dorsey had to stay behind in Tunisia.

2009 was a year of milestone birthdays in our family.

  • February saw the surprise 40th birthday party for Jean at Shearer Elegance.
  • May saw Jake enter into the world of teenagers.
  • June brought us my brother Casey’s 30th, which was kept very low key.
  • July brought us Jean’s brother Jim’s 30th.
  • August saw us celebrate my Mom’s 60th (which was July 19th), again at Shearer Elegance.
  • Though not a birthday, Jim and Jean celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on August 6th

Some highlights from the kid’s year:

  • Brett Graduated from Kindergarten
  • Abby attended her first Junior High Dance
  • Jake played his last season of little league baseball
  • Both Jake and Abby achieved first honors on their report cards
  • Brett lost both his front teeth in the build up to Christmas

Sadly, the year was also dominated by some pretty heavy news. We had some major health scares this year that we’ve had to work through. The word cancer has become one that we’ve started to become numb to as a family.

Around Mother’s Day, my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, albeit at a very early stage of the process. Needless to say, it came as a shock to us all. She made the brave decision to have a double mastectomy, with her surgery in June. She came through the surgery remarkably, and as we approach the end of the year it’s amazing how quickly she’s gotten to her full recovery.

In July, Jean’s close friend Sandy passed away at the age of 39 from cancer. Although Sandy had been fighting the disease for a while, her passing came as a shock to all. It was such a sobering feeling to see this young mother of four taken from her family at such an early age.

Our close friend Peggy was diagnosed with breast cancer later in the summer. It was such a shock when we heard the news, but after consulting with my Mom and Jean’s Mom, Peg decided to follow the same route the two of them took and went with radical surgery. As the year winds to a close, Peg is also very far along in her recovery and the cancer has disappeared. We were lucky enough to get to celebrate her 50th Birthday Party with her family in October.

The final scare came this fall when we found out that breast cancer had returned in Jean’s Mom. She first dealt with this when Jake was a baby and we were really upset with the news. She has managed to go through treatment taking radiation, and as the year winds to a close she is doing very well with a great long term prognosis.

To end this note on a positive vibe, 2009 is the year when Jean finished off her teaching certification. She completed her class work portion of her master’s degree back in the summer, and this fall consisted of her student teaching in two different capacities. She worked September and October teaching 1st grade at West Vincent Elementary and then spent the remainder of the semester teaching special ed at Owen J. Roberts Middle School.

It was a 2-1/2 year process from start to finish, and I’m so proud of the way Jean worked her way through it. There were so many sacrifice that she needed to make, but she found a way to get it all done. What an amazing lady I’m married to.

For those of you who made it to the end of this long rambling diatribe, thanks for following and I’ll do my best to try and keep you up to date in 2010.

Happy New Year to all of you out there, and I hope that 2010 brings good times and much happiness!

Jim

Christmas Day 2009

After church, my family (Mom, Casey, Katie, and Alex) came over for Brunch. We had our traditional holiday fare of baked eggs, pork roll, bacon, and sticky buns (If Dr. Miller is reading this, I abstained from eating any of this food which is not so good for my blood pressure/cholesterol :) ). It was a nice lazy afternoon and fun to hang with the group. My mom shot off to Philadelphia to have Dinner with my brother Jeff; Casey and Alex had other plans.

Following that, we ended up having Jean’s parents over for dinner as planned. In addition, we ended up having Jean’s brother Mike and his family as well. They were supposed to travel up to the Poconos to be with Dottie’s family, but freezing rain killed that plan and we were more than happy to have them. My sister Katie also ended up staying, so we had a nice size group.

Dinner was pretty simple, leftovers from Christmas Eve, and seemed to taste even better than the night before. There’s nothing better than Italian food that’s had a chance to soak in it’s own sauce overnight. Along with that, we had plenty of dessert that was left over from the night before.

Christmas Morning 2009

Santa came to the McMenamin house and the kids made out really well. We didn’t get out of bed until 7:30 ish and we hung around in our pj’s until it was time to head off to mass at 11:15. My mom came over as soon as we woke up to watch the kids open their gifts.

The family got two cool presents for Christmas. The first came from Grandmom Phil, which was an Xbox 360. The other came from Santa, which was a Ping Pong table for the basement. Little did I know that those two gifts would take up the bulk of my Christmas Day.

The Xbox was my first problem of the day. For whatever reason, the wireless adaptor on the Xbox couldn’t seem to find our household wireless router. It took close to two hours to get the problem figured out, and it was actually Jake who made the big breakthrough, although he has no clue what he clicked on to make things happen. Once we got to that point, the rest of it took care of itself in just a few minutes.

The Ping Pong table was an issue just because of the size of it. The first struggle was getting it down into the basement. For those that don’t know, my staircase down into the basement is one of those annoying turned stairways that make it damn near impossible to get anything down the steps.

I took it down one piece at a time, which was awkward due to the pieces each being approximately 4′x5′ and 50-60 lbs each. The table we got came in two pieces and was advertised as “easy to set up”. Although it wasn’t difficult to do, it ended up taking a couple of hours to piece together. Call me crazy, but that doesn’t fit into Jim McMenamin’s description of “easy to set up”.

The big gifts for each of them:

  • Jake-Xbox games (Madden, FIFA, Halo)
  • Abby-iPod Touch
  • Brett-Spy Gear, Video Projector, Nerf Guns

They also got those fun traditional Christmas gifts of socks, underwear and pajamas.

Brett claimed that it was one of the 6 best Christmases he ever had. Now there’s a ringing endorsement from a 6 year old…

Christmas Eve 2009

We spent our traditional Christmas Eve with Jean’s family over at Mike and Dot’s house.  All her brothers and sisters were there with family, so it was a full house (23 of us).

In previous years we’ve had seafood or roasts as the main fare, but this year we went with an Italian theme, which is my dream setup.  Jean’s mom made a lasagna and Jean made pork cutlets. The meal was fantastic and the best Christmas Eve dinner I can recall in quite some time.

After dinner, the kids sat around and opened gifts.  They end up getting two gifts, one from Jean’s parents and one from their Aunt’s and Uncle’s.  It’s a fun night for them and a great tradition.  It’s been going on since I started dating Jean back in 1991.  We do the kids as a pollyanna so it’s not that overwhelming; for example, since we have three children, we draw three names out of the hat, Kate and Aaron have two children, so they draw two names.

We were home a little after 9 pm, which left us plenty of time to prepare the house for Santa’s arrival later that evening.  Brett made sure to get the milk and cookies set up in front of the fireplace as well as sprinkling reindeer food all over the front yard.

Report Cards Came Home

Congrats to all three of our little scholars. Friday was report card day and grades for the first trimester were outstanding.

Brett doesn’t get graded like the bigger kids, but he did very well. The only surprise was that the self-titled “Math Genius” only got a grade of VG in math, not O like we were expecting. :)

Jake did very well getting 2nd honors. He missed getting 1st honors just because of his religion grade. How is it my kid can go to Catholic school and not got top marks in religious studies? Something is wrong with that picture.

Abby got 1st Honors–the first time that’s happened. She always gets 2nd honors but ends up missing top honors by one subject.

I think she may have been spurred on by Jake getting them last spring and then gloating about it. Nothing like a sibling rivalry to motivate.

It’s good to see she was able to pull it off and apparently she’s the only one in her grade who got them.

Obviously we’re very proud of all three of them. They all work hard and it’s nice to see them get some recognition. Keep up the good work.
